Thyroid
Graves’ Disease

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder and the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. In this condition, the immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormones, resulting in overactivity of the gland.

Symptoms of Graves’ disease include the typical signs of hyperthyroidism, such as rapid heartbeat, nervousness, weight loss, sweating, and tremors, often accompanied by thyroid enlargement (goiter). Additionally, specific eye-related symptoms may occur, including protrusion of the eyes (exophthalmos), double vision, redness, swelling, and a feeling of dryness, collectively known as Graves’ ophthalmopathy.

Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, blood tests showing low TSH levels and elevated thyroid hormones, and the presence of specific antibodies (TSI). Ultrasound and thyroid scintigraphy can further evaluate the gland’s function and structure.

Treatment for Graves’ disease includes antithyroid medications to reduce hormone production, radioactive iodine to destroy parts of the thyroid, or, in some cases, surgical removal of the gland. Eye involvement requires specialized care to reduce inflammation and preserve vision.

At our clinic, we take a holistic and individualized approach to Graves’ disease, aiming for effective regulation of thyroid function and overall patient health. We provide thorough information, monitoring, and care at every stage of the disease, with particular emphasis on quality of life and safety.
