Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a disorder in which the thyroid gland underperforms and does not produce sufficient amounts of thyroid hormones, which are essential for regulating metabolism. This condition can lead to a general slowing of bodily functions and affect daily life in ways that are often underestimated or confused with other conditions. Common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, depression, hair loss, feeling cold, memory or concentration difficulties, and menstrual irregularities in women. In many cases, symptoms are mild and develop gradually, making diagnosis more challenging.

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Other causes include thyroid removal, radioactive iodine treatment, iodine deficiency, and certain medications. Diagnosis is based on blood tests, primarily measuring TSH and free T4 levels, and often includes thyroid ultrasound or testing for antithyroid antibodies to identify autoimmune mechanisms.

Treatment for hypothyroidism is straightforward and effective in most cases, consisting of levothyroxine—a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4). The goal is to balance hormone levels in the blood and relieve symptoms. The dosage is individualized based on age, body weight, other medical conditions, and the underlying cause of hypothyroidism. Regular follow-up is essential to ensure proper hormone regulation and to avoid under- or over-dosing.

At our clinic, we approach each case of hypothyroidism with responsibility and consistency, emphasizing accurate diagnosis and full patient education. Through a supportive environment and the use of modern medical tools, we ensure proper thyroid function regulation, aiming to improve daily well-being and long-term health. Additionally, we provide guidance on nutrition, physical activity, and other factors that contribute to better management of the condition, supporting each patient holistically and with respect for their individual needs.
